ROBERT JOHNSON:

This is the award-winning Public Health Review Morning Edition for Wednesday, January 10, 2024. I'm Robert Johnson. Now, today's news from the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.

MARGAUX HAVILAND:

So, INSPIRE Readiness is ASTHO's new innovative platform designed to tackle the pressing challenges of public health preparedness.

JOHNSON:

ASTHO launches a new website next week. Margaux Haviland says the INSPIRE Readiness website goes live January 16.

HAVILAND:

On a platform you can share your experiences, understand the trials and triumphs of others, and find new approaches for complex issues like policy development, funding, system improvements, workforce management, training initiatives, and explore leading edge tools and access a broad spectrum of modern resources.

JOHNSON:

Even though the site is about readiness, Haviland says it's designed for people working in many public health disciplines.

HAVILAND:

It was not built only solely with preparedness and readiness professionals in mind. It aims to bring together professionals and organizations from across the spectrum of public health to collaboratively address those challenges.

JOHNSON:

Haviland says ASTHO wants the site to be a platform for collaboration and learning.

HAVILAND:

It aims to inspire innovative approaches across all facets of public health. The platform also champions storytelling as a powerful resource for knowledge sharing. Through inspire readiness, we can share experiences, lessons learn, and solutions from across public health audiences and a collaboration with our partners.

JOHNSON:

ASTHO plans a live launch event on Tuesday, January 16 at 2 p.m. ET. You can sign up to attend the online event using the link in the show notes.

Cold weather means more cases of respiratory illness with COVID always making things more complicated. This is ASTHO Chief Medical Officer Dr. Marcus Plescia.

MARCUS PLESCIA:

We're not seeing anywhere near the kind of numbers for the COVID vaccine that we'd like to see. I mean, influenza has been better, um, and so I think it's just something about COVID vaccine that has people worried or on the fence.

JOHNSON:

Plescia hopes ad campaigns backed by vaccine makers will improve uptake. He also wants public health to focus its COVID vaccine promotion on key audiences.

PLESCIA:

Obviously, we'd like the general public to participate but we particularly want people in institutions like long-term care facilities to get vaccinated and then a big push we've made is to really try to get health care workers vaccinated.

JOHNSON:

And Plescia says vaccine messaging needs to consider a person's extended family.

PLESCIA:

I think appealing to high-risk groups not just to get them to get vaccinated but also you know, if you are in frequent contact with, you know, elder family members or family members who have chronic illnesses, I mean, that may be another way to motivate people.

JOHNSON:

Also today, excitement continues over Indiana successful campaign to increase public health funding by 1500%. O'Keyla Cooper has more.

O'KEYLA COOPER:

Don't miss ASTHO's virtual webinar on February 6 from 1 to 2 p.m. ET with Dr. Lindsay Weaver and former senator Luke Kenley as they unveil the success story of Indiana's public health transformation through SB 4. Explore the strategic approach, community engagement, and legislative support behind this historic investment. Register now and download the comprehensive report via the link in the show notes.

ROBERT JOHNSON:
