JANSON SILVERS:
This is the award-winning Public Health Review Morning Edition for Thursday, April 25, 2024. I am Janson Silvers. Now, today's news from the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.
CORINNE GILLENWATER:
So, this toolkit is designed to support state and territorial health agencies to build non-traditional multisector partnerships to improve health outcomes and advance health equity by using Healthy People 2030 as the guiding framework.
SILVERS:
ASTHO's Corinne Gillenwater talks about a new toolkit, ASthO has developed that leverages the Healthy People 2030 framework to help build partnerships with a variety of sectors that aren't typically associated with public health.
GILLENWATER:
When public health engages with non-traditional partners like barber shops, local restaurants, university libraries, and faith-based groups, we expand our reach and get to promote community health and well being in an upstream way. Starting with and for the community itself.
SILVERS:
Gillenwater elaborates on why Healthy People 2030 was the right choice for this work.
GILLENWATER:
We chose Healthy People 2030 framework as the bedrock for this toolkit because it can be used and multisector partnerships to identify needs and priority populations, set specific targets, identify evidence-based tools and resources, and monitor partnership progress and use federal data as a benchmark
SILVERS:
She looks forward to seeing non-traditional public health partnerships flourish.
GILLENWATER:
We really hope that public health professionals reach out to and meaningfully engage with some partners that they may not have previously considered, like a grassroots voting rights group, or a civil rights law organization, a local grocery store, a bank, or an urban planner.
SILVERS:
A web version, and a PDF version of the toolkit can be found in the show notes. ASTHO convenes a National Symposium on avian flu today, as the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Marcus Plescia, says public health is preparing.
MARCUS PLESCIA:
You know, we don't know that this is going to cross over and cause problems substantially for humans. But you know, we want to be ready for anything.
SILVERS:
The symposium is today at 10 a.m. Eastern Time, ASTHO CEO Dr. Joseph Kanter will lead the panel of experts from across the country. In a discussion between public health and agriculture officials, the panel will discuss concerns and potential responses, you can listen in through the link in the show notes.
ASTHO and CDC have created a group to ensure health equity as part of all future emergency responses, it's called the Power of Partnerships Health Equity Alliance, here's ASTHO's Tamira Moon.
TAMIRA MOON:
When COVID occurred, CDC realize the need to improve authentic engagement with the community partners. So, that really established the Power of Partnerships Health Equity Alliance. It pretty much was a call of action to that need that CDC has.
SILVERS:
The alliance aims to improve health outcomes for all people.
MOON:
We need to be able to reach communities who often need the most help in times of emergencies, because they lack equal access to equitable healthcare. So, the alliance is definitely helping to meet this gap is to make sure that communities have a voice and they have a seat at the table.
SILVERS:
State health leaders can get involved with the alliance as well.
MOON:
We have quarterly calls for the alliance so the members as well as guests can join. And we have very engaging discussions. Just yesterday, we talked about authentic community engagement. So it was a great discussion, a great time. And just to hear the expertise of our committee and members. It's a wonderful experience.
SILVERS:
More information on the alliance is in the show notes.
