JANSON SILVERS:

This is the award-winning Public Health Review Morning Edition for Friday, February 23, 2024. I'm Janson Silvers. Now, today's news from the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.

AMBER WILLIAMS:

Strategic planning updates on ASTHO's office move, discussion of a newly proposed Innovation Council, review of new policy statements, and discussion on the new CEO.

SILVERS:

ASTHO's Amber Williams discusses some of the items on the agenda for ASTHO's upcoming Spring Meeting. ASTHO is also bringing in some external thought leaders who will present valuable lessons to the meeting.

WILLIAMS:

We're really excited to be bringing experts from Kotter who is the guru on leading change, they will be conducting a workshop with our cohort leadership development programs on leading successful change efforts. So, they will be able to hear from the experts and engage in some experiential learning on that topic.

JANSON SILVERS:

Williams says their Spring Meeting serves multiple purposes.

WILLIAMS:

Our board meets in the spring to engage in its regular business and to meet with HHS leaders. And our leadership development programs are co-located in order to have an opportunity to increase the networks of each of those groups, but also to make sure that we can maximize the training experiences that each of those programs have the opportunity to engage in.

SILVERS:

ASTHO' Spring Meeting kicks off on Sunday.

After seven years in his role, ASTHO CEO, Mike Fraser is preparing to say goodbye.

MICHAEL FRASER:

We've done so much at ASTHO it's hard to say goodbye, it's part of who I am, and certainly gave my all to the job. And I'm going to miss the team a great deal and miss the members a great deal. And hopefully we'll still, you know, keep in touch and have some connections in this new role.

SILVERS:

Fraser will be transitioning out of his current role next week and is reflecting on his original goals for ASTHO all those years ago. One of those was making sure the story of public health is told by public health.

FRASER:

Certainly one of the biggest goals I had was making sure that our communications, our external communications, had the voice of state and territorial public health in it. When there was media, when there was outreach about public health, it really always had, you know, some academic opining from their ivory tower. And I really, with the team, you know, urged us to use the resources we had, which have grown substantially since to tell the story of state public health and get out in the media. And we got health officers in the news.

SILVERS:

Fraser's next adventure takes him to the College of American Pathologists, and he is ready to embrace a new challenge.

FRASER:

That's a premier organization that has some great service lines, not just in the member engagement and support, but also a very significant service line in Laboratory Accreditation. It's the premier Medical Laboratory Accreditation, and it's all member-led, member volunteers. It's pretty amazing. So, it gives me something else to think about, some new challenges, I'm sure, but some great opportunities and a lot of it, you know from the outside, I'm going to really use what we've learned at ASTHO.

SILVERS:

You can hear Fraser's full interview about his time at ASTHO and his new role in a special edition of the Public Health Review podcast out on all platforms next week.

Also today, public health plays a pivotal role in responding to post-hurricane and environmental health hazards. An ASTHO blog article outlines why it's never too early to prepare for hurricane season. You can find a link in the show notes.
